Day 3... XO Day!

First things first, what's with the low shower pressure in St Mary's? If this is an attempt to save work I'm afraid it's not working as you end up taking 2-3 times longer with your shower :)

Day 3 - LCA Opens. Bruce Schneier keynote was very good, not what I was expecting and could easily be digested by anyone not in IT, so I will be sharing the video for this one with a lot of people I know (The Greens will find it interesting I think). I seem to actually be one of the few people that seem to have not read Bruce's stuff before, but I'll be reading his blog from now on.

The talk of the day was the big XO giveaway - I'm not going to go on about it too much, but suffice to say I couldn't help feeling jealous I didn't get one. I did have an idea for software for preschoolers, but I tried to mention it to Jim after the keynote but he didn't seem to be that interested (it's not their target) so maybe I'm just clutching at straws here at a reason to get one.

Talked about XOs in the break. Can't believe there is no offline email. Whatabout people that aren't in the mesh or internet connected and want to mail people. Would be good to have a facility to do UUCP like mail drops for people who don't have internet but know someone that will travel near someone that does at some point during the day (I heard a great anecdote about a vietnemese bike rider with a laptop on the bag that would do the village email delivery). Would like to explore this and the software for pre-schoolers more - feel free to donate a XO to me if you have one spare!

Went to Jims talk in the afternoon and discovered and someone told me there was a VMware image.... bam. Don't feel so bad now, at least I can play with the software. Everything works apart from camera. This vmware image seems to work pretty well on Fusion.

Can't believe literacy in Afghanastan is like 24% - that's shocking.

End up messing with XO for the whole next couple of hours, completely forgot to go to Steve Ellis' talk and didn't hear much of the rockets talk that I was sitting in.

Back to St Marys (hurray I finally have a prox key for the door!) to get ready for dinner. Venue was really interesting, had some lurrvly Etheopian food (running with olpc theme of the day) and some good chats with people (I'm not really very good at socializing... but I forced myself to), the students from the front desk were quite entertaining. I was particularly impressed with one girl's (sorry I forgot your name already) scheme for making money from the food vouchers, she reckoned she could make $27.50 from buying all the cheapest stuff and getting change.

Had a wander on around the markets, planned on buying some jewelry for Carla - but was completely overwhelmed by the choice and ended up buying some juggling balls for me and Jaron.... how does that work out? :) Walked back with Arjen who tried amongst other things to get me too dump SVN... point taken, but I just have too much other stuff going on at the moment to worry about this. [edit: did get some time during my insomnia to investigate Bazaar... looks interesting, I might try it for my own stuff]

(my n810 just arrived from the US.... yay! Thanks Jon for being my shipping intermediary!)
